We wish to produce a set of individual fitting golf clubs by carrying out dynamic lie tests on one short and one long iron, in order for the whole set to be individual fitting golf clubs. For this, we select the TWGT 550c iron from Tom Wishon, Durango, USA. The yellow fields in the: Club Size Range - Calculated Lengths - TWGT 550c table allow us to read off the values for production of both measuring clubs. These are an iron 3 and an iron 9.
We fix the heads of the measuring clubs to stiff steel shafts and mark the respective test club lengths on the measuring club shafts in felt pen. Then, we accurately check the loft and lie angles and if necessary correct these in a bending machine. We will transfer the sole difference values read from measurement in a measuring device onto tables Measuring-Result TWGT 550c Iron 3 and Iron 9, which serves as the reference for the print form for printing the two required templates (Fig. 24+25) – one for test iron 3 and one for test iron 9.
Production of the test clubs is the club maker’s first step on the way to individual fitting golf clubs for one customer. Both the iron 3 test club and the iron 9 test club must be made of the same components as those of the proposed set of golf clubs. The design of the golf club heads must of course be suitable for the player type, and the loft and lie angles as specified in the aforementioned table must be accurately checked and accordingly corrected.
The test club shafts must also be the same, with the tip trim values specified by the component supplier, as developed to suit the golf player type. Whilst the customer is finding the grip, the club maker must ensure for example that the left hand – for right-handed players – also repeats the required grip strength in the later production of the actual clubs.
If the dynamic lie tests show a tested club size result of 35 for both test irons – both test club 3 and test club 9, then one test with a single test club would have been sufficient. Hindsight is a wonderful gift!
In this case, the result would be golf club lengths in the Customer 35,0/35,0 table. However, should the dynamic lie test give a value of club size 35.3 with test iron 3 and a value of 34.7 with test iron 9, then the golf club lengths must be produced according to the Customer 35,3/34,7 table. As with kids’ clubs, the swing weights of all the clubs in a set are measured prior to fixing. These are then set equal for each club either with hosel weights or using lead or tungsten powder – the swing weights of the wedges being given extra. After these corrections, the clubs can be fixed and the grips added after drying. Then, another set of truly individual fitting golf clubs is finished.
